Is it really realistic that all of us can succeed if we just "follow our dreams/passions/hobbies/etc."?
I had an interesting talk with a friend of mine the other night, a friend with whom I share a passion for videogaming. I'm currently between jobs right now, looking for an accounting-related position since that's what I went to school for and I've got my CPA license. Completely on the other end of the spectrum from videogaming, right? It's so easy for people to tell you, "follow your passion, blah-de-blah," and so I've been trying to research online and try to paint myself a realistic picture of what it's like to work in the videogame industry. I came up with the impression that it's a lot of hours, with high stress and tight deadlines, and shaky job security since there's frequently layoffs after companies ship games. After working for 15 hours a day in front of a computer modeling digital swords/guns/babes/etc., are you really so quick to crank up the Xbox and jam on the controller in front of a TV for 2 more of your precious waking hours?
So we concurred that videogames are great as a hobby, maybe not so much if we were forced to develop them for 15 hours a day. My friend had a great quote:
"I would hate to hate videogames."
That's why I wanted to start this blog. I love videogames, I love music, I love writing, I love movies, I love stories, and I love entertainment in general. Accounting is just what I do in order to be able to enjoy the things I enjoy, is there something wrong with that? Sometimes it's just as satisfying to enjoy a game as a fan, not everyone who loves basketball makes it to the NBA.
I like to discover new music online and share with people, so I'll be posting and reviewing random artists or mixtapes I happen to find. I like reading random funny articles so I'll be posting some of that stuff as well. I will post anything interesting that I stumble across in my frequent treks across the digital realm of the Internets. Of course, I also love to play videogames, so I plan to post any reviews or thoughts or funny musings I come up with as I enjoy my hobby(ies).
So expect nothing less than interesting in this blog, I'm not going to post anything in here that I myself wouldn't want to read about.
